Nurse Dan opposes the continued construction of Vineyard Wind located just 15 miles off the southern shores of Martha’s Vineyard which includes up to 84 wind turbines. The 804-megawatt electrical cables would run through Craigsville (Covell’s) Beach in Barnstable disturbing a naturally beautiful and popular vacation spot.
Vineyard Wind is being built by a Spanish-Danish conglomerate. The Harris/Biden administration, and Bill Keating, claim the project will create up to 3,600 jobs over its lifetime and generate affordable electricity to up to 400,000 households. These projections are a pipedream. And, neither Vineyard Wind developers, nor the Harris/Biden government, has quoted the actual electricity costs per household to the consumers.
Not only have the politicians not provided the true costs, they have skirted the obvious. Harsh & corrosive marine environments will corrode the turbines and it's mechanical apparatus. The most important functions of hydraulics in wind turbines include pitch adjustment, yaw and rotor braking, cooling & lubrication, and power transfer. For wind turbines, it is necessary to control the rotational forces placed on the spinning blades of a turbine that weigh tons.
And at high wind speeds, often present in the waters surrounding Cape Cod and the Islands, the blades may rotate faster than they are designed for, which can cause significant damage, requiring expensive repairs, at significant cost to the taxpayers of Massachusetts.
Bill Keating, Kamala Harris, and Joe Biden have made big promises regarding the electricity and revenue that these wind turbines will produce. However, when they are taken offline for damage assessments, repairs, and even for routine maintenance, they produce no revenue whatsoever. A day that a turbine doesn't spin is a day of revenue lost that can never be recovered.
And that is exactly what happened in early August 2024 when one of the blades of one single turbine was destroyed by a lightning strike causing hazardous waste conditions on beaches on Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, and in Barnstable on Cape Cod. (Source: https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/nantucket-beaches-closed-vineyard-wind/)
Because of the poor planning of politicians looking to score political points, federal government regulators had no choice but to take ALL the installed turbines near Martha's Vineyard offline until further notice. Taxpayers still don't know how much revenue is being lost each day the VIneyard Winds turbines don't spin, nor do they know the costs to remediate the damage caused by the one turbine that was destroyed.
The Harris/Biden administration and Bill Keating had no contingency plan in place for such an event. An event that most people who have common sense could see coming from miles away.
The lifespan of a modern, top-quality, highly efficiency wind turbine under optimal conditions is only about 20 years. However, the weather conditions in the waters of Cape Cod and the Islands are anything but optimal. Anyone who lives in those areas, and maintains a home or an automobile, knows just how corrosive the damp, salty air, ever-present in the coastal areas of southeast Massachusetts, can be.
Kamala Harris, Joe Biden, and Bill Keating have provided residents of Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, and the South Coast with no guidance on how these turbines will be maintained, or any contingency plans when a catastrophic event like the lightning strike early August 2024, happens. Now, while that is all being figured out, in back rooms and out of public sight, the turbines have been shut down.
And when they are offline, they truly serve no public good whatsoever. Instead, they become a taxpayer burden rather than the source of clean renewable green energy that Biden, Harris and Keating promised you they would be.
